It is with deep regret that we learn of the tragic death last night of young veterinarian Dr. Ben Cuneen from Redlands Veterinary Clinic. Our sincere condolences go to Ben’s wife and family. Our thoughts are also with the staff of Ben’s workplace. Ben had contracted infection with Hendra virus (HeV) while working with horses at Redlands Veterinary Clinic near Brisbane. Ben had been seriously ill in hospital for several weeks.

As many of you will now be aware, the horse that recovered from Hendra virus (HeV) has been euthanised. The DPI&F seriously considered long term quarantine and monitoring of this horse, however the decision was based largely on the advice of medical authorities as it was decided to be too large a risk to human life.

The owner of a racehorse which appeared to have recovered from Hendra virus has been advised that the national AusVetPlan requires the horse be euthanized to ensure it cannot infect humans or other horses in the future.

The first day of Olympic competition is about as perfect HK can be for this time of year - fine, cool and slightly overcast!! The Games kicked off with Mark Todd first out at 6.30am in the first of two dressage sessions for today. Second session will begin at 7.15pm this evening.
